Respondents of the Migration-Mobility Survey were asked how long they expected to stay in Switzerland. Just over one-third (34%) said they wanted to remain here permanently<\/strong>: of people from South America, West Africa and Italy, 40% said they intended to stay permanently, which is two times the number among Portuguese migrants.<\/p>\n

A majority of respondents (58%) were unable to give an answer. <\/strong>Only a minority (7%) were able to give a precise period for the duration of their stay. Indians (14%) and North Americans (17%) were the most likely to give a definite answer as to the number of years they anticipated remaining in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

There was only slight variation according to respondents\u2019 attributes. The proportion of those intending to remain permanently in Switzerland was however higher among those moving for family reasons, those aged 40 or above or without a university education.<\/p>\n

Note on methodology: <\/strong>These figures are taken from the Migration-Mobility Survey, conducted in fall 2016 on a population of persons born abroad and with foreign citizenship who have moved to Switzerland in the last ten years. To be included in the sample population, respondents had to be between 24 and 64 years of age at the time of the survey, and at least 18 years of age on their arrival in Switzerland. Eleven countries or regions were defined for sampling purposes. A total of 5,973 people replied to the full questionnaire, either online or by telephone, representing a response rate of 37.2% of the total number of persons who were contacted.<\/p>\n

The question asked:<\/strong> How many more years would you like to stay in Switzerland?<\/p>\n

Note: <\/strong>The \u201ccountry of origin\u201d was as declared by the respondent. In most cases it was the same as their country of nationality, or one of their countries of nationality.<\/p>\n
