Recently we witnessed the election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States of America. Given that he has no prior political experience, his election was for a long time considered unthinkable. And since he built his election campaign on xenophobic, racist and sexist language, many dreaded such an outcome. Immediately, questions were also raised about what Trump’s election means for international relations and whether it will boost other populist movements worldwide.

Switzerland introduced women’s suffrage at the federal level through a popular vote on 7 February 1971. To most readers this will seem very recent indeed. Yet at the cantonal level it was only in 1990 that the last canton also introduced women’s suffrage. Overall, it took 142 years before every political body at the federal and cantonal levels recognized the right of women to vote and the right to be elected.

Die Schweiz ist eines der wenigen westlichen Länder, das kein umfassendes Anti-Diskriminierungsgesetz hat. Unter anderem im MIPEX Index wird auf diesen Umstand hingewiesen – und dass es keine Gleichstellungsbehörde gibt, die sich für potentielle Opfer von Diskriminierung einsetzt. Insgesamt landet die Schweiz auf dem viertletzten Platz von 38 Ländern, die MIPEX untersucht hat, mit nur 31 von 100 möglichen Punkten, gefolgt von der Türkei, Japan und Island.

Ainsi donc il a suffi de quelques heures de débats – certes féroces – pour que le Conseil national fasse passer la météo migratoire d’un ciel résolument bouché depuis 2 ans et demi à une riante éclaircie : la mise en place d’une préférence nationale légère serait – il suffisait d’y penser – une réponse au 9 février assez indolore pour ne pas froisser Bruxelles et pour rallier une majorité derrière une loi de (non-)application au goût de l’économie.

Trumping over the US election campaign is also a visa dispute at the WTO. On trial stands a bill by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to double application fees for H1-B visa. India brought its complaint before the WTO on March 2016, alleging that the US had breached its legally binding market access commitments. The US-India dispute could set a precedent if it were to confirm the WTO’s judicial competence over visa – traditionally considered a national prerogative.
