Saskia Greyling is a postdoctoral researcher on the Data Politics and New Regimes of Mobility and Control project of the nccr – on the move.
Saskia received her PhD in Geography from the University of Cape Town in July 2022. Based in Cape Town, Saskia will be part of the team examining the digitalisation of urban governance and its interplay with urban mobility, debates particularly resonant in the context of contemporary public health crises. In the Cape Town context, practices of tracking citizens build on legacies of South Africa’s contentious histories of apartheid racial segregation. Key to this research will be tracking the technologies used for citizen tracking under democratic regimes, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. This work will contribute to understanding governance and the citizen, state, civil society, and market relationships that underpin the deployment of new technologies in the urban realm.
