Insights from Switzerland: The Migration-Mobility Survey

This volume presents key findings from five waves (2016–2024) of the Migration-Mobility Survey (MMS), the largest longitudinal survey on migration and mobility in Switzerland.

The MMS was created to address a persistent gap: although migration is central to Swiss politics and public debate, evidence on migrants’ trajectories and everyday lives has often been incomplete. The challenge was not only to produce more data, but better data: data that follows migration journeys over time and links them to labour markets, family life, integration, mobility, citizenship and cross-border ties. In this sense, the MMS should be understood as more than a survey; it is part of a broader effort to better understand migration and make that knowledge useful beyond academia.

The book is organised around six themes that reflect the survey’s core modules: the journey to Switzerland; migrant profiles; work and professional integration; living conditions and social life; belonging, inclusion and discrimination; and satisfaction and future plans. Each section presents key findings through data visualisations, short analysis and quotes from survey respondents.

Based on nearly a decade of data collection, the volume provides a resource that complements the nccr – on the move’s open Migration-Mobility Indicators and interactive data visualisations, helping turn complex longitudinal data on migration and mobility into clear findings for research, policy and public debate.
