Marriage Prevails as the Most Frequent Living Arrangement
Among the population surveyed, the most prevalent living arrangement is marriage, with 67% of respondents identifying as married, while 21,9% are single. Overall, the marriage rates of the surveyed are higher than those of the broader Swiss population.
However, disparities emerge based on the respondents’ origins. For example, 80% of the foreign population from Asia (including Oceania) report being married, contrasting with 60% of the European population. A noteworthy finding is that nearly 30% of Europeans have never been married, more than double the figure for people from other continents. These differences can be explained by residence permit provisions – for people from so-called third countries, family reunification is the most frequent reason for immigration. Additionally, diverse cultural perspectives contribute to differing interpretations and significance of marriage depending on origin.
