Switzerland, the first migration experience for half of the population surveyed

Number of countries in which the person lived, after excluding the country of birth and Switzerland (Source: Migration-Mobility Survey 2018)

More than half (53%) of the respondents have never lived in another country than Switzerland and their country of origin. This proportion even exceeds 72% for people with a Secondary I diploma (compulsory school) and 65% for those with a Secondary II diploma (vocational training). On the other hand, the proportion of people who have not migrated previously amounts to 41% for tertiary level educated people and 35% for the nationals of South American countries. Overall South Americans are the most frequent international movers. According to this indicator, men appear to be slightly more mobile than women, as they are more likely to have lived in a third country.
